ing lot in the center of town as an informal gathering place. “I have seen a group grow up and leave — and be replaced by another group,” according to a long-time resident.
“This is different,” the resident continued. “These guys are older, and they are not nice.”
Planning Commissioner Mark Bailey, ,who listened to the complaints during the commission’s June meeting, suggested “They are socializing. I used to do that.”
Fellow planner Susan Parrish, however, took issue with that explanation of the current group’s behavior. “Did you hurl insults and make sexual remarks to people who walk past?”
“No, of course not,” Mr. Bailey replied.
The complaining residents said the behavior of the loiterers has become so obnoxious that they fear to walk alone to the post office. “This is not a nice place to live anymore,” one said.
The insults have been directed at residents, but also towards patrons of The Inn at Little Washington, which leases the Trinity Church lot for parking during the evening hours.
