David Smith, the Democratic candidate for the Seventh District seat in Congress visited Washington Thursday and received a check for $1,000 from the local Democratic committee.
New party treasurer Ethyl Bailey presented the check, which came from the fund raising picnic held at the Child Care and Learning Center following the Seventh District Democratic convention held at the high school on May 19.
While he was here Mr. Smith discussed some of the issues raised at Rep. French Slaughter’s town meeting the previous week.
“I’m not for gun control,” he said. “I’m too much of a hobbyist.” He did say he would “think on” the bill now before Congress to require a waiting period before a handgun could be purchased.
On the funding for the National Endowment for the Arts, he said, “I’m for funding for the arts. Museum curators should be able to use their judgment. Arts are an important part of our culture and civilization. I’m not for funding pornography,” he added.
On the savings and loan problem, he said, “We need to get the whole thing out in the open and not have shady little votes that keep things out of the budget. I wish when they deregulated them, they hadn’t kept the taxpayers on the note. The Federal government should have regulated them as long as we’re insuring them.”
