According to one authority the “dog days” of July and August originated in Egypt with Sirius, the Dog Star, which is visible during the 40day period coinciding with sultry heat.

It was assumed that because during this period the dog was irritable, hung his tongue far out, slobbered and sought eagerly for scarce water, it was an evil season. It was believed that the dog was possessed by devils, that his bite was poisonous and contained the rabies germ. Rabies, however, is not seasonal; it is a yearround disease.

Dogs require more air for breathing than humans, and since the dog perspires mainly through his tongue and only slightly through his pads and skin pores, he is affected by the heat more quickly. After all, he wears almost the same coat winter and summer. Consequently, in hot weather the dog pants more and tends to slobber. The more he pants, the more relief he feels.

In hot weather the dog’s sleeping quarters and house should be in a cool and shady place. A shaded screened-in porch is excellent. Dogs susceptible to heatstroke — the shortnosed breeds, such as Pug, Boston Terrier and English Bull, should be kept from direct sun, in a cool place and not overexercised in the heat of the day. Although puppies require a lot of fresh air, they should not be exposed long during the hottest part of the day, for they, also, are susceptible to heatstroke or sunstroke.
