State pitches new
school evaluation

The Commonwealth of Virginia is piloting a new program for evaluating schools and school systems.
The Education Performance Recognition (EPR) program, attempts to determine how well schools are doing at educating students by measuring student “outcomes” rather that division “inputs,” Emmet Ridley of the State Department of Education told the School Board last week.
Dr. Ridley came to the School Board meeting because the board had agreed with Superintendent David Gangel’s recommendation not to authorize the Educational Testing Service, which administers the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), to release results for Rappahannock students to the state.
The state is trying to evaluate the schools in seven areas: preparing students for college, preparing students for work, increasing the graduation rate, increasing special education students’ living skills and opportunities, educating elementary school students, educating middle school students, and educating secondary school students.
