the first year, and then we’ll be monitoring the division’s progress over time. There should be rewards for progress, not just for high achievement.”
Dr. Ridley said that there will be extra funds for school systems most in need of improvement and also funds to reward systems doing well. He said these funds will be in addition to regular funding for schools through the state.
“I’ve been on the board since 1972, and I’ve seen the numbers game with state funding,” Mrs. Massie said. “When we know the state’s coffers are down, it is unrealistic to think something is not going to be cut. I’ve seen that if one program is increased, another program is decreased. I don’t want anybody taken down the garden path to think this program is going to be any different.”
Dr. Ridley acknowledged that the state has limited funds. “This should help us better utilize our scarce resources,” he said;
“This seems a little magical,” new member John Tole said. “It is supposed to promote accountability, but if you do poorly, you are rewarded with funds to help you improve.”
The School Board decided to wait until August before making a decision on releasing SAT data.
