With daily washing, scrubbing and disinfecting the incidence of pests can be greatly reduced. Dogs eat less in hot weather. This is Nature’s way of protecting them from excessive heat. Most dogs prefer to eat late in the evening or early in the morning when it is cooler. Food should not be left out all day as it will spoil quickly. Dishes should be washed and disinfected daily. There should be access to cool clean water at all times. Dogs should be allowed to drink as much as they want, unless they are overheated and then they will tend to drink much and will become nauseated. Exercising should be done only when it is coolest; in the early morning or late evening. On hot days a car is a very dangerous place to leave a dog, even with windows “cracked” or partially opened and parked in the shade. Air conditioning in only for help when the motor is running and the air conditioning is on. Some people leave a dog in the car “for a few minutes” only to find him in distress or dead upon their return. According to certain veterinarians, if the dog is staggering, panting and gasping, put ice packs on the dog’s head, pull his tongue forward so that it does not choke him and rush him to a veterinarian.
