LAS VEGAS — Centel Corporation announced today that effective July 23, Centel Network Communications Inc. (Centel Net) will discontinue operations.
Centel Net, a subsidiary of Centel Corporation, provides long distance service to approximately 30,000 customers in Texas, Virginia, Illinois, Nevada and Florida.
“While we entered the business with high expectations, we encountered substantial regulatory hurdles in several states. It became clear to us over the past several months that we could not effectively meet our goals,” said Greg Taylor, vice president and general manager of Centel Net.
Centel Net customers will be switched to US Sprint’s Dial-1 message toll service on July 23 unless they wish to select a different long distance carrier. Centel Net will pay any carrier change charges. Centel Net customers are being notified of the change by mail.
Central Telephone Company also announced the signing of a letter of intent to become a sales agent for US Sprint’s services.
“Centel Net was formed to provide customers with one point of contact for all their telephone needs,” Mr. Taylor said. “Customers wanted ‘one-stop-shopping’ for their telephone service.
