The School Board also approved changes to policies on home instruction and homework. In the first, parents electing to teach their children at home will be required to have them tested using standardized tests, such as those used by the school system. If they test below the 40th percentile, the parents will be obligated to send them to school. The homework policy recommends times for homework assignments, ranging from 15 minutes per major subject for primary students to 45 minutes per subject for high school students.
The board tabled until the August meeting consideration of the 1990-91 Remedial Plan. “The state requirements have not changed,” Dr. Gangel said. “There are some changes in implementation.” Under the proposed plan students who do not pass the literacy passport test will not be allowed to test out of the remedial program.
At the elementary school, the locally funded program covers students testing in the lowest 25 percent, and Chapter One labs, funded by the Federal government, pick up those students testing between the 26th and 40th percent. At the high school only those in the lowest 25 percent have been receiving remedial instruction.
