“It concerns me to increase fees for books and lunches, particularly for parents with three or more children,” Mrs. Massie said. “I feel we have no alternative, so we need to get the information out to the parents as early as we can.”
New board member John Tole, who represents Stonewall-Hawthom District, suggested that the board consider again subsidizing textbooks in the future. “One can only expect the textbook crisis to continue to increase.”
“Textbooks are going out of sight,” Dr. Gangel said. “Some states are using textbooks written on newspaper which are thrown away at the end of the year.”
Hampton District representative Bryant Lee’s motion to approve the fee increase passed unanimously.
During the organizational part of the meeting Beverly Massie was reelected as chairman, Paul Nichols as vice chairman, Assistant Superintendent Robert Chappell as clerk, and Mrs. Massie as representative to the Piedmont Technical Center board.
