At the time the issue came up, Dr. Gangel told the board he felt that since the high school encourages as many students as possible to take the test, some of them are not very “successful” on it. To compare the scores of Rappahannock students with those of other schools which may encourage only the strongest students to take the test wouldn’t be fair to our students, he said.
He was also concerned that students “privacy rights” be protected, since the students and their parents apply for and pay for the test, not the school system.
Dr. Ridley told the board that Rappahannock is now the only school system in Virginia not submitting data on SAT scores, although some schools have chosen to submit the results themselves, rather than authorizing the Educational Testing Service to do so.
