U.S. Rep. D. French Slaughter Jr., R-7th Dist., announced Monday that he will resign from Congress because of poor health.
“While it has been a great privilege and honor to serve, I have reluctantly concluded that the recent impairment to my health prevents me from continuing my service,” Mr. Slaughter wrote in a letter dated July 1 to Virginia Gov. L. Douglas Wilder.
Slaughter's Washington office confirmed reports Monday that Mr. Slaughter, 66, has been diagnosed as having recently suffered from a series of mildly debilitating strokes.
