Heard an update from Mr. McCarthy on the progress of compiling a county code from ordinances adopted over the years, deleting those which are no longer needed and amending others to meet the requirements of the Code of Virginia.
• Learned that the school system is expecting to receive an additional $36,000 from the federal government for remedial instruction. School Superintendent David Gangel said he expected to use the additional funds to hire an additional teacher for the high school.
• Adopted a resolution to apply for a litter control grant.
• Adopted a resolution praising the work of the Library Board and many volunteers in getting the new library built.
• Delayed appointing anyone to the Middle Virginia Community Corrections Resources Board to replace Bill Slover, who moved to New Jersey. The board wants to try to find someone with knowledge of the criminal justice system to serve on this board, which oversees post conviction intervention such as community service and intensive probation with drug and alcohol treatment for non-violent offenders.
• Authorized Mr. McCarthy to spend up to $8,000 to buy a suitable used vehicle for the dog warden.
