Somehow a transcript of the tapped Gov. Wilder conversation found itself to a Washington Post reporter. The resulting story set off a firestorm of recriminations and investigations. Sen. Robb suspended with pay Mr. McCloud, Mr. Watson
and Mr. Johnson. As oj[ this writing they remain on suspension pending various investigations.
However, Sen. Robb has implied that Mr. McCloud, a man he has come to rely on heavily since gubernatorial days, is blameless while pointing a finger of suspicion at Mr. Watson and Mr. Johnson in the tape leaking accident. Mr. Watson’s lawyer has charged Sen. Robb in seeking to make his client a scapegoat.
Bobby Watson is a normally genial fellow. He rose to prominence in state Democratic circles when he was the right hand man of Richard Davis, the state Democratic chairman back in the 1970s who more than anyone deserves credit for putting the party back in control of moderates who were able to sweep three statewide elections in the 1980s.
Mr. Watson at various times has worked for the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission, been a lobbyist and served as Sen. Robb’s state director. He is a skilled politician now embroiled in one of the state’s most heavily publicized political incidents in its history.
