The State Police superintendent William Corvello was less than forthcoming in giving reasons why his department initiated a probe into alleged threats against several persons who gave the media infomfetion about Sen. Robb’s activities. And once again old allegations were dredged up that Sen. Robb’s partying at Virginia Beach more than once compromised State Police undercover investigations of illegal drug use and sales. ,
Such allegations have been vigorously denied by Jay Cochran Jr., who then headed the Bureau pf Criminal Investigation. But though Mr. Cochran is a man of integrity, the rumors persist. , ’
There is more than enough tar In this whole sorry mess to go around. The guilty should certainly be puhished to whatever extent their transgressions merit. But there ia a danger some who are innocent, or ht least not all that guilty, will suffer. This, after all, has the smell of becoming Virginia’s own “Watergate]”
There is no questions, either that both the Wilder and Robb camps have played the game badly during the evolutionary stages of the brohaha. They have repeatedly been caught in their attempts to be evasive. But history repeats itself. There was the same pattern in WW&S tergate, but eventually it all cahw^ out.
