Seventy-five Rappahannock County youths, ages 6-12, participated in 4-H Day Camp the week of June 24-28. The 4-H Day Camp, which was conducted by the Rappahannock Extension Service, was held at the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center near Front Royal.
“The purpose of 4-H Day Camp, as well as all of our 4-H activities, is educational,” stated Tommy Williams, Extension agent. “Day camp provides the opportunity for local youth to learn skills in the classes they take each morning.”
“This year we were able to offer 11 classes because we had 16 wonderful adults who volunteered to teach the morning classes,” commented Helen Smith, Extension agent. Each child took three of the following classes: archery, cooking, crafts, art, painted Tshirts, sewing, wildlife, Indian folklore, fishing, softball, and first-aid.
“We also had 16 very dedicated teen 4-H members who served as Teen Leaders for day camp, plus one who volunteered to babysit in the morning for three pre-school children so their mothers could be instructors,” continued Mrs. Smith. “The Teen Leaders were great, too. They assisted with the classes, were song leaders, and worked with the younger children to prepare tribal songs, cheers, and skits.” These were performed on Friday when the campers’ parents came for a picnic lunch and program.
Each day following the morning classes, campers enjoyed a swimming period followed by lunch. Each afternoon camp ended with a special activity or program. On Monday, campers took a hike on the Appalachian Trail, which crosses the 4-H Center property.
On Tuesday, Jean Falk-Morgan, a local dancer and actor, presented a program on storytelling and improvisational drama.
Laurie Marshall, a local artist, presented a program entitled “Portraits, Landscapes and
