be tough, efficient guys. While serving as Sen. Robb’s strong right arm in Richmond, Mr. McCloud commanded the respect of members of the Virginia General Assembly. That was one of the reasons why when Gerald Baliles became governor he asked Mr. McCloud to stay on as chief of staff.
I am trying to get at the human tragedy of what is unfolding, the wreckage beyond the sensationalism. It seems unlikely, though I have no certain knowledge, that Mr. Johnson or Mr. Watson will be returned to their former posts and it may be even too late for Sen. Robb to salvage Mr. McCloud as much as he’d obviously like to. We have talented people whose careers have certainly been badly damaged by the extraordinary publicity and who will have to suffer in coming months through the continuing investigations.
Sen. Robb emerges tarnished. He can forget any future presidential ambitions and, indeed, very possibly any thoughts of seeking senatorial re-election in 1994.
