“I know strawberries,” Mr. DeBergh said, sitting in his brass and leather office nestled behind the old packing house in Washington.
He does not wear a suit and tie but is casually dressed.
Besides his knowledge of strawberries, he’s learned a great deal about raspberries, blackberries, peaches, apricots and several other fruits.
“If I don’t know it, I find out,” he said with a smile. Each fruit brings new customers to his business, which was started in 1982.
During the busy part of the year — May through August — Mr. DeBergh often works days similiar to a farmer’s day — 16 to 18 hours in length.
“I’m eating, thinking and working fruit,” he said.
He talks fast and is constantly interrupted by telephone calls. The facsimile machine rings in the other office during an interview.
Harris Hollow Frozen Fruits is located in a building that was once a bam and is now renovated and decorated like any office found in any metropolitan city.
