Help your reader visualize the item you have for sale. You will sell your merchandise much more quickly if you include a very specific and accurate description of the item in the ad copy. You should include all of the essential details of an effective word ad. age, condition, size, brand name and price.
Let your reader know when and where to contact you. There is nothing more frustrating then trying to make a call only to receive no answer. Don’t make it difficult for potential buyers to contact you! Be sure to include in your ad the hours you will be home to answer inquiries about the items you have to sell. Remember, a potential customer probably will not call twice!
Don’t use abbreviations. Nvr. frust. a pot. cust. w. abb You want to make the process of reading your ad easy for your potential customer. Most readers will not take the time to try to decipher confusing ad copy. (We bill by the word, not by the line, abbreviations are unnecessary). Limit your use of abbreviations to the following ten: approx, (approximately), ave. (avenue), blvd. (boulevard), bldg, (building), condo (condominium), rec. room (recreation room), refrig, (refrigerator), rd. (road), sq. ft. (square foot), st. (street).
Choose a consistent ad schedule. To insure great results, plan to run your ad for several weeks. If you run the ad only once, you run the risk of missing the buyer most in need of what you have to offer. If you run the ad for several weeks, you will draw the maximum response. Remember, you can always cancel the ad as soon as you find a buyer!
