About $18,600 was cut from the public safety budget. The main item cut was deputies for the jail. Sheriff John Henry Woodward had included in his jail budget funds to pay for a cook at the jail. The state compensation board did not fund that position.
The supervisors cut $75,000 from public works. Mr. McCarthy said that amount could be cut because bids for construction of the sfecond phase at the landfill came in lower than expected and because the first phase could be closed out under EPA guidelines, which are less expensive than guidelines of the state’s Department of Waste Management. At Monday’s budget work session, the supervisors also cut $1,200 from animal control. The Rappahannock Animal Welfare League has been receiving $400 per month to take care of dogs at the shelter. They had asked for $500 per month.
Mr. Gilkey noted that the state only requires that dogs be kept for five days. He said RAWL frequently keeps dogs for up to 15 days. He said he did not have a problem with
