We have some budding playwrights at Rappahannock Elementary. According to Eleanor Katz, a group of her seventh graders recently wrote a one-act play, “Hurricane Claire.” The students are Marie Andreoni, John Arnold, Adam Bouffard, Amber Charles, Melissa Dodson, Nathan Flinchum, Jenni Foster, Holly Gangel and Laura Schadler.
They have been studying legends and fables (which, as we know, teach lessons or give morals to a story). Mrs. Katz wanted to challenge the students and came up with the idea of writing a play and performing and filming the final project.
To fit into their studies, they created a play that deals with hardships and that contains a moral lesson. The plot has several teens caught in a hurricane while on a cruise ship. The hardship brings them close to each other through the need for survival.
The students designed and built the set and manufactured their costumes.
After filming the staged performance, the videotape will be available for other classes to view.
Mrs. Katz said the students will be competing the project on their own with little assistance and during their own pull-out time.
All kindergarten classes were busy this week taking the Metropolitan Reading Test, required by the School Board.
