I believe that Congressman George Allen should be applauded for his attempt to bring some accountability back into the historic designation process by putting local officials into the equation in his proposed bill, HR 4849.
Imagine a special-interest group coming along and getting Congress to pass a law that all Ford owners must have their cars designated as historic because Henry Ford invented the automobile (Henry didn’t invent the automobile, some just decided he did; history is what you make it).
