There are more questions than answers about the Are that killed a 23-year-old Conde man, formerly of Rappahannock, in the early morning hours of May 1.
Fauquier County Sheriff Joe Higgs said the victim has tentatively been identified as Neil Jacob Burke, who died of smoke inhalation after his 1988 Pontiac caught fire on Route 688, near the Route 647 intersection north of Orlean.
The Sheriffs Office is requesting assistance in its investigation, Sheriff Higgs said. He asked that anyone who might have seen Mr. Burke between 9 p.m. April 30 and 4 a.m. May 1, or who has information about his whereabouts during those hours, contact Lt. James Waddell of the Fauquier Criminal Investigations Division, 703-347-6870.
Sheriff Higgs said that “due to the severity of the fire, identification of the victim’s body has been difficult. The Burke family has assisted by providing dental records and other information, but we have still not been able to make a positive identification.’’
The car was registered to Mr. Burke’s parents, Patricia and Abraham Burke of Tiger Valley near Washington, Va., and other information points to Mr. Burke as the victim, the sheriff said, but the identification remains tentative.
Sheriff Higgs said the fire, which apparently started in the console area, completely burned the car and was nearly out when it was discovered by a passing motorist about 5 a.m.
