The Tour Du Pont, the country’s most prestigious bicycle race, will cross through Rappahannock County next week, part of the fourstate, 1,000-mile route.

The race is expected to attract 16 teams of seven cyclists each, including many of the country’s best racers.

Three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond, an American, is among those competing for $300,000 in cash and prizes.

The Tour Du Pont will run through Rappahannock County about mid-day on May 12, as part of the sixth leg, from Hagerstown, Md. to Massanutten, Va.

The cyclists will come through Chester Gap on U.S. 522 at approximately ll:45 .a.m. Traveling about 24 miles per hour, they will proceed to the Massies Comer intersection with U.S. 211, make a right turn and head toward Sperryville. From Sperryville they will go right (south)
