Jeanne Wyss
Jeanne Thobum Wyss, 82, died Saturday, May 2 at Mont Vue Nursing Home in Luray.
Mrs. Wyss, wife of Col. Arnold V. Wyss, was born in Oklahoma City, Okla., Nov. 2,1909, the daughter of Joseph Bradfield and Caroline Conwell Thobum.
Her father was one time secretary of Oklahoma Territorial Board of Agriculture, later a history instructor at the University of Oklahoma, followed by many years with the Oklahoma Historical Society. He authored or co-authored several books on Oklahoma history. He was the subject of a biography published by the Oklahoma Heritage Association in 1980 titled “Joseph B. Thobum, Pioneer Historian and Archaeologist.” He was a long time member of the SAR and served as Captain and Major in the Oklahoma National Guard.
Mrs. Wyss’ mother was prominent in the DAR and served for 25 years as the Oklahoma State Secretary of the Womens Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Both parents were graduates of Kansas State University.
Mrs. Wyss and her husband established the Joseph B. Thobum Memorial Award given annually by the Oklahoma Historical Society as its premier award to the state’s outstanding high school student of Oklahoma history.
