What about
that debt?
To the Editor:
Check bouncing? How about the national debt?
Why do the mass media focus only on the personal irresponsibilities of some congressmen? The headlines ought to be calling attention to the record of any congressman, senator, or president who is responsible for the massive indebtedness of this nation.
Consider: During the current fiscal year, the president has already told us there will be a deficit of $399 billion. As recently as 1975, spending for the entire federal government was less than this year’s deficit. If Congress wasn’t going along with the plan for massive amounts of red ink, it wouldn’t happen.
The admitted national debt now exceeds $3.6 trillion and will top $4 trillion by Oct. 1. Annual interest on the debt was an astronomical $303.9 billion as of last Oct. 1, more than the entire federal government’s spending during the height of the Vietnam War. Additional interest payments this year will add $30 billion to the staggering taxes and amounts to $2,750 additonal from each taxpayer.
It is quite evident that the president and a majority of Congress are pushing this nation into economic slavery via debt.
