The car was sitting in the southbound travel lane with the gear shift in neutral and the parking brake set, Sheriff Higgs said. Investigators determined that the gas tank did not explode and appeared to be empty.
The driver’s seat was found in a semi-reclined position, and investigators believe it is possible that Mr. Burke fell asleep behind the wheel after stopping the car, Sheriff Higgs said.
Sometime after that, the sheriff said, the car was consumed by fire, killing Mr. Burke.
“The actual cause of the fire is still undetermined,” Sheriff Higgs said, “but based on the investigation and the lab results, I can say that alcohol was a contributing factor in the incident.”
