Mitchells residents, outraged on several counts by the proposed prison, have filed suit against the DOC in an effort to stop the project in its tracks.

According to‘Charlottesville attorney, D. French Slaughter III, who represents the CRCP, the local citizens’ objections are based on three different grounds. First the group claims, said Slaughter, that the project has not been properly apEroved

by state officials and that the >OC has failed to complete the necessary environmental studies requested prior to the aquisition of the property.

The group is also claiming that the plan is in direct conflict with Culpeper County’s Comprehensive Plan. “The department, in selecting the prison site, failed to consider the prison’s impact on Culpeper County in terms of increased burdens on Culpeper public services, the county’s future development patterns and its local economy,” said Slaughter.
