A Sperryville man is in custody in the federal detention center in Charlottesville, facing charges of cultivation and possession of marijuana.
Shenandoah National Park’s chief ranger, Larry Hakel, said a search warrant was served early Monday morning on Henry Randolph Rodgers, 25, of Sperryville, at his home on Route 600 west of Sperryville. Hakel said Rodgers was charged with growing marijuana within the park.
The raid also involved members of the Planning District 9 Regional Drug Task Force and deputies from Rappahannock and Culpeper counties, Hakel said, as well as other federal agents. Hakel said the investigation remains open, and additional charges may be filed.
In another incident in Shenandoah National Park, Hakel said rangers believe a man who apparently walked aw’ay from a jail in Vermont has left the park’s South District and adjacent Rockingham County, where he was sighted several times last weekend.
Hakel said a ranger stopped a car about 8:30 p.m. July 25 near Loft Mountain, and the driver fled on foot into the park’s backcountry. The car was later found to have been stolen July 23 in New York State.
A manhunt by federal and local law enforcement agencies Saturday night and early Sunday morning failed to locate the driver, who is believed to be Rhe R. Higbee.
Rockingham County Sheriff Glenn Weatherholtz said a house in the Big Run subdivision, south of Glkton near the park boundary, was burglarized early Monday afternoon. The thief took food and a 1978 Chevrolet Malibu.
