I went to the Scrabble Rabble thing again this year. This is a Saturday afternoon affair that starts on Friday morning and ends on Sunday afternoon. I have done 15 minutes of research on the beginnings of this party and I will relate to you what I think that I have found. (You may recall an early column that put a disclaimer on the accuracy of any facts that I present).
Sometime in the late ’60s, the hippie movement was blooming in Rappahannock County. There were new moon parties and solstice parties. These faded out as the hippies faded out, started cutting their hair, accepting jobs, starting businesses and getting married.
This was replaced for the past nine years by the Rabble Scrabble. Then there is the simpler reason projected that it is somebody’s birthday party. (Please note that no names will be mentioned in this article, or if they are, they will be fictitious.)
There are never any invitations but somehow 300 or so show up. Some bring food, some contribute money, some furnish booze and then there are those that bring only an appetite and a thirst. The real fun was that so many brought little people and all of them had fun without taking a drink, (of booze, that is).
I understand that late in the evening some rednecks showed up looking for trouble but the party was out of beer so they left peacefully. In the ’60s a redneck had a short-haircut, now they have long hair.
Another way to identify a redneck is to watch him walk, he puts his hands in the front pockets like he is protecting his equipment and then throws his legs forward in a slow swagger like he knows what’s he’s doing.
They only perform like this if they are in a group. Alone they will sit in a corner and never speak. Also (now I'm on a run) a redneck will take a sip out of a bottle or glass and after each will hold it up high as if checking on his effect on the drink. He will do the same thing when he picks his nose. I know you have seen them do these things.
