Library Board
'wish list' debated
The Library Board with three new members met for the first time last Thursday and immediately became bogged down in a “wish list” of things to buy with unspent building funds.
Librarian Nikki Lynch, working with board chairman William Young, had drawn up a list that ranged from new folding tables and chairs for the meeting room, to computer furniture, to book ends for books that don’t yet fill their shelves. The most discussion concerned whether to buy casters to put on bookcases in the children’s section so they could be moved to make more room for meetings.
There is $9,878 left in the building fund. The board has agreed to spend $3,800 for work on the driveway and expanded parking areas. This will leave about $6,000 for other purposes. In the end the board agreed to spend $795 for a lockable case to store the gift of a 128-volume set of books on the Civil War. The board will consider additional purchases at a later meeting.
Board member Lucia Kilby reported that the Rappahannock Garden Club spent over $1,000 on plantings at the library. The board agreed to appoint Judy Lewis of Flint Hill as landscape coordinator.
Treasurer Helen Platt reported that the library had only spent $5,700 of the additional $10,000 the Board of Supervisors had approved for the operation of the library during the fiscal year that just ended. Mrs. Platt said that her estimates of expenses had been very accurate but more than had been expected came in from donations and book sales.
