mowing height the more frequent mowing reduced clippings 22 percent, roots 21 percent, and rhizomes 34 percent. This suggests that more frequent mowing is more harmful at lower mowing heights.

The question of how to dispose of the clippings is often raised. Research was conducted on common Kentucky bluegrass to determine the difference in thatch development brought about by nine years of collecting and not collect ing clippings.

There was no significant ( rence between treatments in th rst five years. In measurements xen in the ninth year a 12 percent reduction in thatch development (organic matter weight) resulted from collecting clippings over the nine year period. Clippings of cool-season grasses are thought to contribute little to thatch buildup, because in contrast to roots, sheathes and rhizomes, they contain small amounts of Lignin.

Clippings do have significant nutrient value. Research conducted on a Kentucky bluegrass-creeping red fescue mixture maintained with approximately four pound N/1000 square foot per year for three years showed significant amounts of nitrogen derived from clippings in the third year.

In these studies, using radioactive nitrogen tracers; when clippings were not returned, about equal amounts of nitrogen were derived from soil and applied fertilizer. Where clippings were returned, clipping yields increased by about onethird and nitrogen in the grass plants was coming equally from soil, fertilizer, and grass clippings.

There is interest in the value of mulching mowers. Research at the University of Illinois and the University of Massachusetts does not show a statistically significant reduction in thatch with the use of mulching mowers. Mulching mowers do tend to speed up leaf decomposition and nitrogen recycling.

In general, higher mowing heights, less frequent mowing (within limits), alternating mowing patterns, using light mowers and returning clippings where possible, will tend to reduce the total stress created by mowing.

HAGERSTOWN, Md. The Potomac Edison Compuny is advising its customers that tampering with their electric meters is not only dangerous; it’s illegal.

“Diverting electricity is a serious matter,” explained Harry Saufley, Potomac Edison's manager, Blue Ridge area. "Our first concern is the safety of our customers. Diverting electricity can be dangerous. It is also a crime.”

Potomac Edison will prosecute anyone found tampering with his electric meter and will bill for the electricity that was diverted.
