Excellent effort
Congratulations to all of our winners at the 37th anhual Culpeper, Madison, Rappahannock Farm Show held this past weekend at the Culpeper agriculture grounds. According to Helen Smith, home economist for the Farm Extension, while participation was down a bit in the adult category, participation was up this year with a total of258 youth exhibits.
The Rappahannock young people and adults who entered the show this year did an excellent job. It was obvious that a lot of hard work and preparation went into the show, from the livestock categories to the good food /crafts, agriculture and art work exhibits and it paid off in terms of high marks and numerous ribbons.
This week five of our students chosen to participate in Summer Quest, the Governor’s summer program for the gifted and talented, spent several days in the Shenandoah Mountains learning about the land that is part of their county and the reasons to value it.
It seems that often teenagers take a bad rap about what ' they are doing with their lives these days and you will hear adults bemoan the fact that ‘things just aren’t the way they - * used to be’ when they were young. • * However, as we all know the bad news generally takes priority over the good and sometimes the remarkable things our teenagers are doing are overlooked.
The hours of effort expended for months before the show by each youngster who entered his steer, lamb or pig is testimony to each individual’s level of responsibility and j„ j:_i!_a.~ 4.1_:_4.
