Just as children with handicaps need special attention, the average child needs just as much education as the gifted child. Probably every child should be thought of as a gifted child - gifted with a good disposition, a fine character, athletic or artistic talent, the ability to work well with others, to notice things others don’t see - there are hundreds of gifts to be looked for and appreciated.
The people who live successful lives, make important contributions to society and supply the glue that holds things together don’t have the same educational experiences, but they all need help from many directions. That is why education is about cooperation, not competition.
I can assure you that those who emphasize education to make money, and education to achieve high test scores are not the people who care about the development of an educated citizenry.
Look for those who are concerned for individuals in all aspects of their lives when you listen to talk about education. Look within yourself to assess what are the most significant educational experiences that you have had.
Help to raise the level of discussion about education and if you really want to know what happens in our schools, visit them so that you will have specific information on which to form opinions.

on bonds
To the Editor:
How do you spell “bonds?” T-AX-E-S!
We’re being asked to vote in November for $613 million in additional state debt through bond issues. Adding the $400 million in interest required on these bonds gives a total of over $1 billion more in taxes that will have to be extracted firom Virginians.
Oh sure, our politicians tell us that these bonds and interest can be paid from existing taxes and there will be no increase. If you believe this, you believe in the tooth fairy!
Many Virginians are losing their jobs, losing their homes, or declaring bankruptcy. Now is the time to lower taxes, reduce government regulation, and lower government spending.
State bureaucrats must tighten their belts like the rest of us. Vote no on all State bond questions and vote yes on lower taxes.
