To the Editor:
I am very upset about the article “High school pregnancy stats alarm School Board” in the July 23 paper.
I was part of the 9th grade during the 1991-92 school year. I was very upset that it was stated the number of sexually active and pregnant girls in each grade and the suspicion of more in the 9th grade. I feel that this is a very personal decision in one’s life.
It is nothing to be thrown about on the front page of the newspaper. I feel that the “statistics” in that article could and do make people uncomfortable with their decision to have or not have sex.
The concerns should not be who or how many people are having sex, but how to assist them and how to teach and warn them about the consequences and diseases that are a part of that decision. Also, to help them deal with the pressure of sex and school.

solutions
To the Editor:
If everyone in Rappahannock County is not in pain after reading the article in the July 23 Rappahannock News (High School Pregnancy Stats Alarm School Board) than we have become numb. Perhaps we assume that this problem as well as drug and alcohol abuse are problems only in other places. Yes, it has been pointed out before that we had a problem, but never in such stark terms.
These problems are what led me to join with the CCWHY (Community Coalition Working For Healthy Youth), not to talk about what should be done, but to be used in any way necessary. Why should I care? Our son is a grown man and surely there must be other ways to spend my tim'e than messing about in other people’s lives.
It frightens me to know that our children are in danger of losing their lives, in more than one way, by indulging in such risk-taking. Something must be missing from their Uvea. It is wrong to assume that once a program is in place, the problem is solved. It is wrong to assume that another program will ensure success. We are the way to success.
