The Board of Supervisors started playing musical offices last Wednesday and then decided to stop and wait a month.
The county received a letter from District Court Judge Charles B. Foley and A. Burke Hertz, judge of the juvenile and domestic relations court, last month asking if more rooms could be made available for witnesses in the court house. Currently witnesses mingle in the hallway and in the one waiting room. For juvenile and domestic relations cases this is particularly difficult and potentially dangerous.
County Administrator John McCarthy recommended that once the reassessment is finished, the registrar move into the back room of Commissioner of Revenue Beverly Atkins’s office building. He had written a letter to the judge saying the registrar would be moved out of the courthouse and the magistrate’s office would be moved into the registrar’s office. Also the room used for the breathalizer and two days a week by the juvenile case worker would be moved to the same side of the building next to District Court Clerk Pat Davis’s office. That would have freed up two additional rooms to be used by witnesses.
