Ponds useful

in many ways

Ponds can be useful in more than one way, according to John Jeffries of the Soil Conservation Service. “Ponds are now serving a variety of purposes, including water for livestock and irrigation, fish production, field and orchard spraying, fire protection, wildlife habitat, debris basin, recreation, and landscape improvement.”

There are three major concerns to consider before building a pond. A good pond site contains: a topography (lay of the land) that provides for economical pond construction, a water supply that provides adequate, but not excessive amounts of water, and a soil type with sufficient clay content to hold water.
