“There are many things the localities could do without having to go through the process of getting them written into the code of Virginia,” he said. "I would favor amendments.”
Mr. Massie asked Sen. Miller, “Would it be a fair assumption that the longer you have been in Richmond, the better the Dillon Rule looks?”
“That would probably be a fair assumption,” Sen. Miller said. “Also the longer I’ve been in Richmond the worse term limits look.”
The supervisors asked Sen. Miller his views on the proposed football stadium for Potomac Yards in Alexandria.
Sen. Miller said he opposed that because the citizens of Alexandria oppose it and other localities want the stadium. “So long as there are reasonable alternatives, I’m opposed to shoving it down the locality’s throat,” he said.
At last month’s meeting Mr. Gilkey proposed that the county add an objection to the proposed stadium to the legislative agenda. This did not pass unanimously, so the board opted to table the matter until this month’s meeting.
The supervisors adopted an addition to the legislative agenda opposing “the expenditure of any state resources for the construction and operation of an athletic studium in the Potomac Yards area of Alexandria.” The motion to add this position passed four to zero with Mr. Massie abstaining.
