Next we heard speeches by the head of Stennis Space Center and by the pilot of two space shuttle Discovery flights. We then boarded the buses for the Stennis Space Center Engine Test Complex, where we waited 30 minutes while a new space shuttle main booster engine was prepared for testing.
At 10:15 p.m., a sudden rumbling noise filled the air and steam from the water cooling system began billowing out from the test tower. It felt as if we were being pounded on the chest. The test continued for five and a half minutes, and when the engine finally shut off, the air was filled with a huge mushroom-shaped cloud of steam.
On Tuesday, we returned to the Coliseum for photography and final safety checking of our projects. Both Zee’s and my exhibits passed without trouble, and we were free for the day.
I spent the afternoon jet-skiing. At 5 p.m. a beach party began with the arrival of the Navy SEALS. Six SEALS jumped from a plane and parachuted to a soft landing on the beach. Dinner Was provided by the Coliseum staff.
