James S. Clark IV, of Washington, received a third place award in the 44th International Science and Engineering Fair held recently at Mississippi Beach, Miss.
Clark, a student at Rappahannock County High School, was presented with a $150 award and a plaque from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineerss (IEEE) Computer Society. He also received a free membership in the IEEE Computer Society.
More than 800 students the United States and several foreign countries competed for top prizes of scholarships, trips to Europe, cash awards, computers and educational equipment.
Clark’s project, “The Traveling Salesman Problem: Modeling Likely Human Problem-Solving Performance” involved using a computer to determine how a person would solve the problem of visiting some 20 different cities while travelling the shortest possible distance.
“The judges were great,” said Clark, “There were almost as many judges as competitors. They knew what they were talking about, and asked intelligent questions. At one point there were 15 or 16 judges looking at my exhibit at the same time:”
“The beach was great, too,” he added.
