Trooper C. Wltfne Sumner, a recent graduate of the Virginia State Police Academy, has been assigned to Rappahannock County.
"He has already started working,” said Trooper Charles “Chuck” Moore. “We’re very pleased to have him with us.”
Trooper Sumner is a native of Carroll County in southern Virginia. He has spent the last six years with the U.S. Marines in Hawaii, where he served as a corporal with the military police. He is a graduate of Emory and Henry College in Emory, Va.
The State Police Academy recently graduated 73 troopers, including Sumner, who have completed the 89th Basic Session at the Academy. The new troopers received 32 weeks of training in subjects ranging from laws of arrest and search and seizure procedures to police professionalism and testimony in court.
Capt. Don Martin, commander of the State Police Academy, says the program requires complete dedication on the part of every trooper. “The training builds- character and focuses not only on the academics of criminal justice studies, but also oti excllence in the delivery of police sendees,” Capt. Martin said.
Trooper Sumner, ^0, is single. “For the next few weeks I’ll be getting oriented, learning about Rappahannock County and meeting people,” he said. “I hope to find a place to rent very soon and move into the county,” he added.
