With the showing of The Muppets’ Christmas Carol at the Theatre in Washington Sunday, the weekly movies put on by the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community (RAAC) will come to an end.
Declining ticket sales combined with the difficulty of getting volunteers to run the projection screen, ticket counter and concession stand account for the decision to end the showings.
William Young, who oversaw the movies for nearly 10 years before turning the operation over to Rick Kohler, said the basic problem is “there aren’t 52 good movies made every year.”
To save on costs movies were cut back to one showing a weekend, but still not enough customers came.
Some movies played to packed houses, but more frequently only a handful of moviegoers came.
Dr. Ybung said RAAC is planning to showr occasional movies, but will try to present more live entertainment.
