Critics and supporters turned out in nearly equal numbers at last Tuesday’s meeting. Track advocates pointed out that the complex would stimulate an important but stagnant Virginia industry, create jobs and pave the way to preserving farms.
“People talk about supporting jobs, I’m asking you to support people who are here, an industry that is hurting very badly — veterinarians, farriers, stable operators, people who build barns, people who take care of horses, people who sell tack and supplies,” Fauquier resident Richard Gargagliano told the board. “To support the rural character of this area, you have to support the horse,” he added.
If it’s granted a license from the Virginia Racing Commission, the group plans to open the Haymarket track and equestrian facility in 1996v;.
