I must apologize to Supervisors Gilkey for not being better informed about the meaning of a Rolling Road when I visited him. Remember, in times we are now discussing roads were nothing more than bridle paths. The pioneers who came to settle the land were required to deliver a thousand pounds of top leaf tobacco to the wharf at Falmouth near Fredericksburg to be loaded on ships for the British Crown. Thus a need for a road to roll hogs head to tobacco with ox or mule teams. I presented Mr. Gilkey with a “Family Tree” the day we conversed.
I did not mention a Rawlings Road-there is no such road to my knowledge. If he had looked at the top left hand corner of that Tree he would have found Poe’s Road, formally called Rolling Road (as all Rolling Roads in that day were). After years of use, Poe’s Rolling Road was shortened to Poe’s Road. What has been mentioned in this letter has been researched and documentation is available.
It has been said that there has not been much opposition to the renaming of Poe’s Road. The fifty member Historical Society has been against it since day one. There have been numerous letters written that support the Poe’s Road name remain unchanged. It’s ironic that the His
