Marcy Lynn of Washington; found out last month that her book; Mr. R.H. Snoolyridge and theT Search for Sastrid Berries won fourth place in the National Written;; and Illustrated by... Awards Con-' test for students 14-19. The contest was sponsored by Landmark Edi-■ tions of Kansas City, Mo. *
Miss Lynn a sophomore at the; College of Notre Dame of Maryland ; in Baltimore majoring in fine arts.She actually began work on the book' as a senior at Wakefield, and it was! included in that year’s Talisman, the school’s prize winning literary mag-; azine, as an insert. *
She said her mother Pamela.; Lynn saw entry blanks for the contest at a Front Royal bookstore and; encouraged her to enter the contest. * She added to the book, some test but ■' mostly intricate colored illustrations 1 of the animal characters, for the con-1 test. ;
There were over 7,000 entries in; the contest, which has three divi-< sions by age-group. The first place 1 winners in each age group will be; published by Landmark, which may; also publish other entries. » ■ •;
The contest rules required thatthe book appear as it would if pub-! lished. Miss Lynn made a hardback: cover using canvas and cardboard.; The book also has a jacket with the author’s photograph and brief biography.
The book is sewn together, and ’ the illustrations were drawn on the ; actual pages because Miss Lynn was ; not sure how to reproduce them. She - said she got help from Sister Vencent Brothers, a graphics designer on the Notre Dame faculty, in using, Macintosh software for the text.
Miss Lynn said her goal is to« write and illustrate children’s books. 1 If Landmark does not publish her; entry, she intends to find out how to; go about submitting it to another*; publisher. I
