PRINCE WILLIAM — Although the Prince William County Board of Supervisors voted last Tuesday to approve a special permit application allowing the Commonwealth’s first pari-mutuel race track to be built in Haymarket, opponents vowed that the fight is far from over.
The vote was 6-2 in favor of the Virginia Jockey Club’s request to operate a track and equestrian sports complex, yet the five-member, governor-appointed Virignia Racing Commission ultimately will decide the fate of the Prince William site — and four other locations proposed by five other applicants for the license.
The Prince William supervisors endured more than four hours of testimony by 105 proponents and critics of the intended 640-acre track and equestrian sports complex, before deciding in the track applicant’s favor well past the stroke of midnight.
Those in opposition to the project attempted to set the tone early, marching with “Down with Dominion Downs” posters outside the McCoart Building before the public hearing, and wearing t-shirts or stickers protesting the facility.
