Formed by four wealthy New Yorkers, the Orange County Hunt Club took up residence here circa 1903, changing the face of The Plains forever. The wealth they brought to the area improved the character of the countryside considerably, creating new jobs and thrusting the tiny village into the national sporting spotlight.
And who can recall the days when the old Bolte house, near the center of town, harbored a ring of prostitutes? When Arundel undertook his massive project to clean up The Plains in the late 1970s and early 1980s, he bought and closed down the derelict house. It was a move that he wryly noted did not win him “any popularity contest” with some of his friends in Warrenton and Middleburg.
