Tours Planned
Surrounding areas are gearing up for special Christmas tours and celebrations also.
Morven Park near Leesburg is open for holiday tours from Dec. 3 through Dec 12. The Morven Park Carriage Collection will be included with the purchase of Christmas tickets.
Morven Park, a 1,200-acre estate west of Leesburg was the home of Thomas Swann a 19th-century Maryland governor and former 20th century Virginia Governor Westmoreland Davis.
Tours of the house and carriage collection are from noon until 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults. Children under 12 will be admitted free of charge. Morven park is operated by the Westmoreland Davis Memorial Foundation Inc.
Middleburg is hosting hunt-country Christmas tours Saturday and Sunday Dec. 11 and 12. Glen Ora, the former home of President John F. Kennedy and his wife, is one of six stops included on the tour.
Sporting Life Stable at Huff Farm is another stop. It is home to the thoroughbred horses raised by breeder and race organizer Carol Holden and radio personality and former Redshkins middle linebacker Sam Huff.
The original mansion at Notre Dame Academy is another stop on the tour as is a home outside town on property granted to the town’s founder Col. Leven Powell. Two of Middleburg’s oldest townhouses complete the six stops.
A portion of the proceeds from the tour will be used for Middleburg preservation and beautification projects. In town, visitors will have an opportunity to taste wines from Middleburg’s three vineyards and to hear stolling carollers.
The homes will be open generally from noon to 7 p.m. both days, but Sporting Life Stable and Notre Dame Academy will be open from noon to 5 p.m. on both days. Glen Ora will be open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 4-7 p.m. on Sunday.
