Haymarket resident Isabelle Washington said the proposal “has nothing to offer but problems. And we have enough problems without a race track.”
And despite defeat at the county level, the opposition seems unwilling to give up its efforts.
“We plan to keep pursuing this. It is clear that this site has a substantial amount of controversy,” said Larry Roberts, chairman of the Haymarket-based Citizens Concerned About the Race Track, following the supervisors’ vote. “This is the battle, not the war.
"Racing in Virginia is fine, but we think this site has a number of major flaws. It isn’t a good place to put a race track,” he said.
Roberts said that Concerned Citizens About the Race Track will take their objections to the Virginia Racing Commission when it holds public hearings, slated to begin late this month or early next year.
In recent monthly meetings, the Racing Commission has debated the merits of making site visits and holding its own public hearings in December.
A decision has been stalled by the commission vacancy caused by the September resignation of former lieutenant-governor I’red Pollard. Gov. L. Douglas Wilder is expected to name a replacement soon.
