At Monday night’s Board of Supervisors budget work session, Hampton District representative Mike Massie sought reassurance that budget requests won’t keep increasing.
Several speakers supported the library’s request for an additional $9,077 in local funds to employ a part-time staff person 24 hours a week. The employee has been employed under a grant for computerizing library records. Librarian Nicki Lynch said she needed to continue to employ the person so she would have back up when she has to be away from the library.
She said the 23 library volunteers are very valuable, but their average age is 70. She said during the past winter several weren’t always able to be at the library on their appointed days.
In the state the average is one staff person for each 1,000 in population, she said, while for Rappahannock the ratio of one for 4,181. “It’s about time to add another staff person,” she added.
Norman Getsinger, one of the library volunteers supported the request. He said the volunteers “need, the assurance the library will continue as an institution to be adequately supported from a budget standpoint.” The retired community makes heavy use of the library and having such a library is necessary to
