The county Planning Commission moved swiftly through a list of five applications last Wednesday recommending approval for all of them.
Mild controversy greeted the application by commission member David Fannon and his wife Elizabeth “Dutchy” to open an antique shop in a house they own on 7.63 acres on U.S. 211 east of Ben Venue. The property is zoned agricultural as is the adjoining 142.6 acres holding their house and farm. The farm is also restricted by a scenic easement.
The zoning ordinance allows antique and gift shops in agricultural zones with a special use permit, but the shop must be in the owners house or “an accessory building thereto.” To meet that requirement the Fannons said they would merge the smaller tract into the larger one, thus giving up the right to have a separate residence on that property and calling the current house an accessory building to the main house on their farm.
